School of Electrical Engineering, Tel-Aviv University Head, Tel-Aviv center for Artificial intelligence and Data science Title: Universality Abstract: Probabilistic modeling is the key ingredient in optimal communication, signal processing and learning. However, in reality, the probabilistic models are unknown or even nonexistent. Yet, there is data and hence practical communication and learning systems work under uncertainty and varying conditions. The key capability to combat uncertainty is termed universality. Universal schemes adapt, learn, work, and can even be optimal, no matter what the model is. The universality concepts will be presented at various settings and under various assumptions in several basic problems: (i) Lossless source coding and the associated problem of universal prediction and learning; (ii) Channel decoding and channel coding (which requires at least some feedback); (iii) Joint source channel coding: a universal hybrid analog-digital solution recently received the scientific and engineering award of the academy of motion pictures (Oscar) |
