International Review Committee Report 2023

“The Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Technion is a center of world-class scholarship, education, and innovation.
The technical staff and graduate students are equal to their counterparts in the world’s elite academic institutions.
The Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering is a significant reason for the excellent reputation of the Technion.
What is happening at the Faculty, both in teaching and research, has had a profound impact on Israel’s prosperity and security throughout history, and it continues to do so at a time when Israel is flourishing and leading in the high-tech field in Israel and around the world.

The committee concluded that the Faculty is an asset to the world, enjoys a high reputation as a world-class research center, faculty members excel in teaching and research (world-class), and hence also derives the training of the most excellent students at all levels. It attracts students, who are among the best that can be found anywhere in the world, Faculty that excel in teaching and research, and enjoys internal solid leadership and the support of other faculties at the Technion. The report it publishes is a cornerstone of future planning for continuous improvement.

Committee members:
Prof. Vincent Poor (Princeton University)
Prof. Lorenzo Alvisi (Cornell University)
Prof. Eli Yablonovitch (University of California, Berkeley)
Prof. Shih-Fu Chang (Columbia University)
Prof. Meir Feder (Tel Aviv University)

Quotes from the report:

Research
” The Faculty has enjoyed a very high academic status since its establishment and has only improved over the years and reached the level of the best in the world. The committee was particularly impressed by the young staff recently hired. The way to get the most value from these young professors is to support them fully, Provide them with the best equipment, and provide them with the best students who can build on what they have learned from their mentors. The faculty has shown excellent agility in transitioning to the most productive areas of the field, including nanophotonics, machine learning, Artificial intelligence, and quantum technology, as well as critical applications in medicine, finance, and information security. They rank among the best in the world regarding standard measures of academic productivity. “

teaching
“The faculty offers leading education and training to undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty graduates are undoubtedly among the best at the Technion and in the world. The committee is very impressed by the rigorous teaching and education programs at the Technion,
Including the theoretical components and the unique practical learning experiences through many laboratory projects.
Recognizing the quality of curricula and education is particularly strong for the electrical engineering and physics track, which combines comprehensive fundamentals of electrical engineering and physics. “

Faculty Recruitment
“The faculty prides itself on world-class faculty members and continues to make outstanding recruitments that ensure it maintains the very high standards it has set for itself.
Moreover, these young faculty members are well accompanied both by the faculty leadership and by their senior colleagues,
And they feel included in the Faculty’s activities, including the ability to participate in recruiting discussions and other important issues that affect the future of the Faculty.

Students
The relationship between the faculty and graduate and undergraduate students is excellent. The students feel mentored and supported and take pride in the achievements of the faculty and the distinguished history of the Technion. The faculty, in turn, speaks and takes pride in the quality of the students they teach and advise.

Infrastructure
The Faculty has an excellent infrastructure for conducting research and teaching at a high level in terms of buildings (a new one is now being built),
Equipment and laboratories. In particular, the committee notes the teaching laboratories, whose number (12), in terms of areas and quality, are the best in Israel.
In addition, the Faculty pays excellent attention to providing student spaces and work areas.

Microfabrication operations
The MicroFabrication Lab is a valuable campus asset managed by the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Despite the enormous operational cost of these facilities, every major university around the world now requires a micro and nanomanufacturing facility for engineering, as well as for medicine, physics, and other campus units.

Industry and Intellectual Property Issues
There are many positive points regarding the relationship between the Faculty and the Technion in general with industry.
There is a comprehensive industry affiliation program that includes a good number of companies.
There is a desire for large Israeli high-tech companies and subsidiaries of international companies,
For cooperation with the Technion. We also applaud the recent initiative of a “Research Fellow,”
a prominent industry member can be a part-time faculty member at the Technion.

Faculty Management
We had a very positive impression of the faculty management. The Dean, an outstanding researcher, and leader, is very committed,
Dedicated, with a broad understanding of the needs of an excellent educational and research institute. Also,
The supporting team, led by Jacob Yavor, seemed highly capable.
