The Technion mourns the passing of Distinguished Professor Jacob Ziv

Prof. Ziv, a graduate of the Technion and one of the most significant researchers in the Technion’s history, joined the Viterbi Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty 53 years ago. He served in senior positions at the Technion and the Israeli Academy.

In 2021, Prof. Ziv received the IEEE medal of honor For his vast and extensive work, extensive contribution to information theory and data compression, and exceptional research leadership. Prof. Ziv was the first Israeli to receive this global recognition.

The Technion sadly bids farewell to Research Prof. Jacob Ziv, one of the pillars of the Technion and the Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the most outstanding researcher in the Technion’s history. Technion President Prof. Uri Sivan eulogized him: “The scientific contributions of Research Prof. Ziv forever changed how We transfer, store, and process information. He was a source of inspiration for all of us – a beacon that signifies scientific excellence and the potential inherent in it to start technological revolutions that affect the lives of all humankind. For me, Prof. Ziv was an example, mentor, and friend who accompanied me along my academic path at the Technion. Of blessed memory.”

“Prof. Ziv was a great researcher and a great person,” Prof. Adit Kider, dean of the Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering, paid eulogized him. for electrical and computer engineering in his scientific way and his conduct. His research approach was characterized by combining deep theory with important practical applications. He mentored and educated researchers who followed his path and led the faculty as dean on the way to academic excellence. Prof. Ziv was a source of inspiration for all of us, and his absence will be felt. Together we will continue his path.
