An In-Depth View: Technology Enhances Quality of Deep Tissue Imaging

Researchers at the Andrew and Erna Viterbi Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering have introduced an innovative approach to wavefront shaping, as published in Nature Communications. This breakthrough has significant potential for non-invasive biological imaging of deep tissue, demonstrated by successfully imaging neurons.

Traditional wavefront shaping required invasive techniques, such as inserting fluorescent markers into tissue samples. These methods had limitations, especially for deep tissue imaging, where weak signals often led to noisy data. The new technology from the Technion addresses these challenges by enabling direct tissue imaging with dual wavefront correction, both in the light sent to the tissue and in the light returning from it, resulting in clear, high-resolution images.

Led by doctoral student Dror Aizik and guided by Prof. Anat Levin, the research achieved deep tissue imaging, overcoming significant distortions that typically produce unusable images. This advancement opens doors for improved imaging of neurons and other tissues, supported by the European Research Council, the US-Israel Binational Science Foundation, and the Israel Science Foundation.

Prof. Anat Levin, an expert in optics, image processing, and computer vision, joined the Technion in 2016. With a distinguished career and numerous awards, including three ERC grants, her leadership has driven this groundbreaking research forward.
