Annual Memorial Event for the Late Research Professor Jacob Ziv

On Thursday, March 23, 2025, the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering held its second annual event marking two years since the passing of the late Research Professor Emeritus Jacob Ziv.

The event was attended by the President of the Technion, Professor Uri Sivan; representatives of the late professor’s family, including his children and grandchildren; the Dean of the Faculty, Professor Idit Keidar; faculty members; and guests, some of whom had known and worked with him.

The ceremony opened with remarks by Technion President Professor Sivan in memory of Jacob Ziv. This was followed by a speech from Noam Ziv, who paid tribute to his father and expressed his gratitude to the faculty for organizing this event, which motivates him to travel from the U.S. each year to participate in this meaningful commemoration.

Following the opening remarks, a fascinating lecture was delivered by Professor Meir Feder from Tel Aviv University. This technical lecture, aimed at a broad audience, was closely related to Jacob Ziv’s research work, particularly his pioneering contributions to compression algorithms developed with the late Professor Abraham Lempel. The talk explored the complexity of finite-state machines, the impact of Ziv’s groundbreaking research on Professor Feder’s own work, and insights for future studies.

The event was also attended by guests from other universities across Israel and from industry.

The event was moderated by Professor Yigal Sasson, a faculty member of the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the initiator of the annual memorial event for the late Professor Jacob Ziv.

Special thanks to Yoram Or-Chen and Inbal Ginat, Coordinator of the Dean’s Office, for their assistance and organizational support, which contributed to the success of the event.

The faculty takes great pride in commemorating the legacy of Research Professor Emeritus Jacob Ziv, an outstanding individual who left an indelible mark on the advancement of science and technology through his groundbreaking research. His contributions spanned key leadership roles at the Technion and the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, as well as the mentorship of numerous researchers who have become faculty members and senior industry professionals. Alongside his professional excellence, he was known for his humility and modesty, which characterized him throughout his life.
