Prof. Guy Bartal received the Norman Siden Technion’s Excellence Award

Academic excellence awards are awarded annually to leading Technion researchers for their research achievements.

This year the Norman Siden Prize was awarded to Prof. Guy Bartal for his research in the field of photonics, and in particular for his recent work in the journal Science: “Optical skyrmion lattice in evanescent electromagnetic fields”

“nano-hedgehogs  of light”

In this work, the researchers produced and measured, for the first time, unique light configurations in which the electric field of light is directed in all directions at the same time, similar to hedgehog spikes.

These formations, which have attracted considerable interest in magnetic materials, have not been demonstrated so far in light, or any other form of electromagnetic waves, and their discovery may lead to fascinating applications in optical storage and processing.
